Mastering the requirements process

Blast-off and Scope of Work

  • the blastoff meeting establishes the scope of work
  • the scope of work is ideally shown as a context diagram

Business use cases

  • triggered by business events
  • once triggered are running continously until there’s nothing left to do
  • Business events are initiated by adjacent systems

Adjacent systems

  • an organization, an individual, computer, a piece of technology or combination
  • active adjacent systems have an objective and interface directly with the work
  • active adjacent systems are part of the work
  • autonomous adjacent systems communicate through one-way dataflows
  • cooperative adjacent systems interact predictably with the work, they are normally automated systems

Requirement types

  • conscious requirements: stake-holders are talking about them all the time
  • unconscious requirements: stake-holders fail to mention them, because they’re so much into the material
  • un-dreamed-of requirements are those, the stake-holders haven’t dreamed possible
